  • Bachelor of Arts Degree (BA Honours) , IIii, in History: took courses in aspects of Ancient, Medieval and Modern History, specializing in popular rebellions of the Tudor period in England. Subsidiary subjects: social anthropology and German translation.
  • Royal Society of Arts/University of Cambridge Preparatory Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language: grade B.
  • Master of Arts Degree (MA) in Linguistics and English Language Teaching - awarded Distinction.

Modules taken : Methodology for TESOL, Language Learning for TESOL, General Linguistics Topics, Elements of Grammar, Phonetics and Phonology, Discourse Analysis and Sociolinguistics.

Dissertation : "Japanese second-language learners and the English article system: a study in error analysis". This involved original experimental design, the collection of data in Japan and subsequent statistical analysis together with suggestions based on the study for a new approach to teaching the English articles to Japanese learners. Awarded a mark of 78% (Distinction).

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

07/87 - 08/88 Claims preparation clerk with a medical insurance company in Manchester, UK. Responsible post which involved assessment of claims and subsequent remuneration of costs to subscribers.
09/88 - 04/92 Period of residence in Germany including employment as freelance English tutor and as a receptionist in the Arabella Westpark Hotel, Munich.
05/92 - 02/94 Teacher of English at Lang Education Center, Hiroshima, Japan. Taught a range of classes at all levels to children, teenagers and adults, including external company programmes; set up and ran a German language course; contributed lectures on history as part of a series of classes on culture.
04/94 - 08/97 English instructor at ECC Foreign Language Institute in Hiroshima and Kyoto, Japan. Taught a range of programmes at all levels of proficiency including considerable experience with college and university students; involved in devising and organizing extracurricular activities and the development and use of original teaching materials.

INTERESTS

  • Musical composition - owner of a small recording studio; have previously written, produced and recorded numerous original electronic and rock compositions. Contributed background music for two art exhibitions staged in Hiroshima in 1994 and 1996. A keen and proficient guitarist.
  • Travel - have visited almost fifty countries in pursuit of cultural and historical interests, enjoying the challenges of communicating and exchanging ideas with people from different cultural backgrounds.
  • Sports and leisure - main interests are yoga and mountain-biking, as well as being a keen badminton and chess player.
